For those who, like me, have eagerly awaited its return, I have exciting news – and an important heads-up! The spectacular Lima to Huancayo train, a journey through the heart of the Peruvian Andes, is officially back on track for passenger service in 2025. However, due to its immense popularity and the nature of its operations, tickets are released at relatively short notice and sell out incredibly fast.

After periods of suspension due to factors like the COVID-19 pandemic and the devastating effects of the El Niño phenomenon on the railway, Ferrocarril Central Andino S.A. (FCCA) has resumed this unforgettable high-altitude adventure. This is a significant development for travelers and railway enthusiasts alike, as the train was previously on hold with no clear timeline for its resumption.

Confirmed Departures for 2025: Bookings Go Fast!

The Lima to Huancayo train operates on a very limited schedule, making each departure a special event. For 2025, two key holiday periods were announced:

  • Holy Week: The train successfully completed its Holy Week journey, departing Lima on April 17, 2025, and returning from Huancayo on April 20, 2025.
  • National Holidays (Fiestas Patrias): The highly anticipated journey scheduled to depart from Lima on July 26, 2025, and return from Huancayo on July 29, 2025, is now fully booked. This demonstrates just how quickly these coveted tickets disappear once released!

Given the extremely limited number of departures each year and the high demand, it's crucial to book your tickets as soon as they become available. All tickets are exclusively sold through the official Ferrocarril Central Andino S.A. (FCCA) website.

Important Note for Future Departures: FCCA typically publishes its departure dates at relatively short notice, often coinciding with major Peruvian holidays. If additional dates for 2025 or future years become available, we will do our best to share that information here, so be sure to check back regularly!

An Unparalleled Journey Through the Andes

The Lima to Huancayo train journey is truly nothing short of spectacular. It offers a unique experience as it chugs its way to Galera, the highest-altitude standard-gauge railway station in South America, reaching an astonishing 4,781 meters (15,681 feet) above sea level. This makes it the second highest railway journey in the world, surpassed only by the Qinghai–Tibet railway in China.

Along its 12 to 14-hour route, the train crosses through 58 bridges (including the impressive Carrión Bridge, 218 meters long) and navigates 69 tunnels. Passengers are treated to two official tourist stops, including a fascinating demonstration at San Bartolomé where the locomotive is turned around.

While the food quality onboard is often described as "so-so," the experience of traveling through such breathtaking landscapes is unparalleled. The convenience of onboard services, including a nurse and oxygen for altitude concerns, ensures a comfortable and safe journey.

For those seeking the ultimate comfort and views, the "Clase Turistico" offers comfortable Pullman seats, panoramic windows, and access to the observation carriage, promising unmatched vistas of the majestic Peruvian Andes. As with any high-altitude travel, we always recommend acclimatizing to the elevation and consulting with a doctor if necessary.
