We start the tour in Salvador de Bahia, one of the culturally most diverse cities in Brazil. Salvador de Bahia has a fantastic colonial center where many cultural events take place. We fly to Vitoria, from where we travel by train for nearly 700 km to Belo Horizonte, the capital city of Minas Gerais. Minas Gerais is heaven for Museum Railways. The first museum train trip goes from Ouro Preto to Mariana. Then, we travel to Tiradentes, where we ride on another Museum Train to Sao Joao del Rei. In Rio de Janeiro, we visit the Sugarloaf Moutain and the Corcovado, among many other sights in the city. We continue traveling south for a journey on Brazil’s most famous tourist train from Curitiba to Moretes. Feel the tropical breeze when we ride on this fantastic train through breathtaking tropical mountain scenery. In Campinas, we ride on the museum steam train to Jaguariuna. Sao Paulo is the last destination of our trip. We visit the city and make a journey to Paranapiacaba, where we visit the spectacular old Funicular System. You have the option to visit the spectacular Iguazu Falls from Sao Paulo. Not far from the Waterfalls is the Itaipu Dam, one of the largest artificial dams in the world. In Iguazu, we visit the falls from the Brazilian and the Argentinean side. Let yourself be captivated by the highlights of Brazil!

Tour Itinerary

1st Day Sunday: Arrival in Salvador de Bahia
You arrive with your international flight in Salvador de Bahia. Transfer-In to your Hotel. In the evening, we invite you to a welcome drink where we discuss the latest tour updates. 

2nd Day Monday: Dannemann Factory + Santa Cruz Farm
Discover the historic city of Cachoeira where you learn about its importance in the early colonization of Brazil. Visit candomblé temples, colonial mansions, and 18th-century convents and churches of this small town. The Dannemann Cigar Factory invites us in the afternoon to explore the fascinating world of tobaccos for cigar & cigarillo. 

3rd Day Tuesday: City Tour in Salvador de Bahia 
We travel on Salvador de Bahia’s metro system, one of the oldest electrified train systems in South America. During the city tour, you will discover the history of the first capital of Brazil. The Historic Center of Salvador de Bahia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We visit the old neighborhood of Pelourinho and in the upper city, we explore the colorful mansions in typical Portuguese style, colonial churches, and magnificent and lively squares and cobblestoned streets.

4th Day Wednesday: Salvador de Bahia – Vitoria
Enjoy a relaxing Wednesday. In the late morning, we go to the Airport in Salvador de Bahia from where we fly to Vitoria. We invite you to a panoramic city tour of Vitoria, including a visit to the Convent of Penha before we go to our hotel where we stay overnight.

5th Day Thursday: Train Vitoria – Belo Horizonte
Early morning transfer to the Pedro Nolasco Railway Station in Vitoria to board the train to Belo Horizonte. The train travels the 664km (413 Miles) in 13 hours. Enjoy a relaxing day on the train in “Executive Class.” In Belo Horizonte, transfer from the railway station to our hotel in the city. 

6th Day Friday: Belo Horizonte and Ouro Preto
We do a city tour in Belo Horizonte in the morning and drive then 100km (63 Miles) to the UNESCO World Heritage City of Ouro Prieto. Ouro Preto played an important role during colonial times because of the Gold Boom. We spend the night in Ouro Preto. 

7th Day, Saturday: Train Journey Ouro Preto – Mariana
Transfer to the railway station and train journey to Mariana. Enjoy the trip on the museum train traversing the lush green countryside, typical for the region. Mariana was founded on July 16, 1696, and conserves the characteristics of a baroque city, with its churches, buildings, and museums. Mariana was the first capital city of the state, Minas Gerais. We spend the night in Ouro Preto. 

8th Day Sunday: Steam Train Journey Sao Joao del Rei – Tiradentes
We continue our journey driving 160 km (100 Miles) to Tiradentes, where we board the Museum Train to Sao Joao del Rei. We visit the railway museum and the Rotonda in Sao Joao del Rei before we return to Tiradentes. Tiradentes is full of cobblestoned streets and historic buildings. We stay overnight in Tiradentes. 

9th Day Monday: Tiradentes – Rio de Janeiro
Today is a travel day. We leave Tiradentes right after breakfast for the 277 km journey to Inhomirim where we board a regular train that brings us the Brasil Central Station in Rio de Janeiro. It is a unique experience arriving in Rio de Janeiro by train. 

10th Day Tuesday: Rio de Janeiro
Get an overview of Rio’s most famous sights during our full-day tour. Early morning we travel with the cog-wheel railway up the Corcovado to see the Christ the Redeemer statue. We visit the famous beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema. We end our tour taking the cable car from Urca up to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain.

11th Day Wednesday: Rio de Janeiro
Day at leisure in Rio de Janeiro. 

12th Day Thursday: Flight to Curitiba
Early morning we fly to Curitiba. A local guide shows us this surprisingly exciting city. Overnight we stay in our hotel in Curitiba. 

15 Day Friday: Sierra Verde Express
We board the Serra Verde Express Train in Curitiba and travel to Morretes. The train journey goes through the ecological reserve of the Serra do Mar, all the way down to sea level to Morretes. Moretes is an attractive, small colonial town with Portuguese style houses, churches, and a Craft Market. We stay overnight in Curitiba.

14 Day Saturday: Train Campinas – Jaguariuna
We fly early morning to Campinas and go then to the railway station from where we travel by train to Jaguariuna. This Museum Train is a fantastic train journey to explore the greater region of Sao Paulo. Our train returns to Campinas in the late afternoon. Our tour bus awaits us at the railway station and brings us to our Hotel in Sao Paulo. We reach the hotel in the evening. 

15 Day Sunday: Santos
We go to Paranapiacaba where we visit the railway museum dedicated to the famous Paranapacaba Cable Railway. Then we go to Santos, Sao Paulo’s large port city a the Atlantic Ocean. Tram and Funicular journeys are planned during this day. We return to Sao Paulo in the afternoon where we stay overnight. 

16 Day Monday: Sao Paulo
We explore Brazil’s largest city, Sao Paulo. We visit the Pacaembu, Paulista, and Ibirapuera neighborhoods. In downtown Sao Paulo you see the Pátio do Colégio, the Municipal Theater, and the Anhangabaú Valley. In the afternoon, we visit Luz Park and the Pinacoteca at Luz Station. We stay overnight in Sao Paulo. 

17 Day Tuesday: Departure
At the given transfer to the International Airport for your flight home. 

 

 

Optional Extension to the Iguazu Falls

17th Day Tuesday: Flight to Foz do Iguacu
Transfer to the Airport in Sao Paulo and flight to Foz do Iguacu. Transfer to the hotel and check-in to your room. Hit the trail for a 1,2 km (3/4-mile) walk on the Brazilian side of the falls. The catwalk goes over the brink of a series of falls that make up Devil’s Throat (Garganta do Diablo). We stay overnight in Foz do Iguacu. 

18 Day Wednesday: Iguazu Falls
We begin our tour on the Argentinian side of the Iguazu National Park.  A small train brings us towards the Devil’s Throat, the biggest waterfall of the entire complex. Then we walk the upper circuit from where we can observe many more falls, such as Dos Hermanas, Chico, Ramirez, Bosseti, among others. In the afternoon, we return to our hotel on the Brazilian side of the falls. 

19 Day Sunday: Sao Paulo
Morning at Leisure. In the afternoon flight back to Sao Paulo where we stay overnight. 

20 Day Monday: Departure
At the agreed time, transfer to the Airport for your international flight.
