Departures 2020 Train Lima - Huancayo

The Ferrocarril Central Andino S.A. (FCCA) is operating passenger trains between Lima and Huancayo. FCCA published today the passenger train schedule for 2020.

The train passes on its way to Huancayo, the highest regular-gauge railway station in South America at an altitude of 4781 m (15'681 ft) above sea level in Galera.

What is unique about this railway journey is the ascent from Lima at 150 m a.s.l. up to Galera at 4781 m a.s.l. in about 6 - 7 hours. I recommend that you acclimatize well to the altitude before you undertake this train journey.

The railroad climbs up the mountain, passing over several spirals and doing 6 Zigzag's between Lima and Huancayo. The exciting part of the train journey is between San Bartolome and La Oroya, where the train enters the Mantaro Valley.

The tourist train to Huancayo departs about 8 - 9 times per year between April and November. During the rainy season, January - March are no passenger trains running due to the probability of landslides.

The trip from Lima to Huancayo or vice versa takes about 14 hours. Train tickets include airline-style breakfast and lunch. The service of a nurse and oxygen is available on the train for passengers with altitude problems.

On the journey Lima - Huancayo, the train does two official tourist stops where passengers can go off the train. The first stop is in San Bartolome, where the passengers can watch how the locomotive changes direction. The second stop is at the Galera Station, the highest railway station on the journey. On the trip from Huancayo to Lima, the train stops in Galera only.

The Lima - Huancayo Train has carriages in "Clase Turistico" where you have comfortable Pullman seats, panoramic windows, and airconditioning. In "Clase Turistico," passengers have access to the observation carriage with a bar car and lounge.

On the other hand, there is the "Clase Clasico" with straight seats and standard windows. The seat arrangements in Clase Clasico are 2x2 benches facing each other with a small table separating the facing benches. Classico passengers don't have access to the Observation car during the spectacular part of the train journey. The food served in "Clase Turistico" and "Clase Clasico" is the same.

I strongly recommend paying the supplement for the "Clase Turistico." The journey is much more comfortable, and the views from the observation car are the best you can experience on a train if the weather is beautiful.
